The University I'm at currently doesn't offer a specific Fashion Merchandising major, but does offer Consumer Science and Merchandising major… BBBUT, I want to major in business (marketing) with a focus on retail (which my school suggests for people who want to do retail merchandising/buying)… then minor in Consumer Science and Merchandising and if I can, (I don't know if we can have 2 minors) also minor in Psychology. Does that sound like a good plan? Any suggestions? Maybe I should trying getting a job (next summer) at an apparel store?!

The answers and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I think it is better to work in fashion store after you have some fashion/garment knowledge. lt can help you sale in store. then, you enter into store, you could hard to learn how to sale and how to ideal with different customers which you could not learn fm your university. September 25, 2008 fashion event sponsored by TeenVogue and O’Neill Sportswear.

The program was born out of a vision by the company to have interns be involved with the creative design process where teams from 5 different High schools (Diamond Bar, Dana Hills, Sage Hill of Newport, San Clemente High school, and El Modena High school) where invited to shadow ONeill designers and ultimately make their own designs and garments. After this process, which took several months, they took these finished fashion designs to this Runway in front of their high school peers who in turn voted for the team they thought had the best design.

Moms, Dads, friends, and the students jammed into Seven Degrees to watch the five chosen contestants unveil their designs, each with a dress and a purse created with the help of a fashion mentor.

The five designers started out with sketches and worked on everything from design to runway production. They were also responsible for marketing their team, with several groups getting creative by making Myspace pages and holding school rallies.

I was wondering with an associates degree and 2 years sales experiences in retail and an internship can i become an assistant buyer?

It may be difficult but if you tell or proove to them that you are going to pursue your bachelors degree someone will bite. Especially if you present yourself well. Write a letter of introduction to a purchasing manager. You will get a call but you must go after more than one.

Sadly I'm in Michigan and the market for fashion here isn't much to talk about, but I'm tossed up between two schools. Is it important to take a CAD-Design course or can I live without it? One school offers an intro CAD course, Fashion Illustration, Draping, and Flat Pattern…..the other doesn't offer the CAD or the Illustration course but it's really good in regards to textiles, fabrics, and overall quality. So considering that I am in Michigan…..what should I be looking for? Or should I just not worry about it and just go to gain skills in sewing/fabrics an art and just focus on my portfolio…Any Suggestions?

Go for the CAD- Design course because you'll learn the fundamentals of how clothes are created from the first sketches, to the store garment & you'll be learning great skills. You'll probably discover which area of 'fashion' you want to pursue. It's a lot more interesting than people think.
I've taught designers flat pattern making. One person was having problems because her designs couldn't be produced. She didn't understand patterns so it's very important.
You could take up sewing as a hobby whilst doing the course. Many fabric stores offer short classes & you can learn a lot from the other people there.
