Any students of the Fashion Institute of Technology Fashion Merchandising Program? I have some questions..?

..I don't really want to be a buyer or anything like that. I want to sell my own things one day and I thought the fashion merchandising program at FIT would give me a good business background and knowledge to start up my own business? What is really learned in the fashion merchandising program? am I better off sticking with business classes at a community school? Anybody who has gone to FIT for fashion merchandising i'd really appreciate any feedback, information, and opinions. Thankyou!

If you want to learn about the business side of the fashion industry, the FMM program at F.I.T. is a great program to get you well versed in each facet of the business side of the industry. You'll learn a little about everything. You'll learn about product development, licensing, buying, textiles, direct marketing, consumer motivation in fashion, market research, trend forecasting, and retail management. Like any other business, it's about numbers – this is especially important if you'd like to run your own business in the fashion industry. As an FMM major you need to be able to understand how the industry functions (creative side) and have an eye for innovation, but you'll also need to have good quantitative skills. My suggestion would be, for the first two years go to a community college and major in entrepreneurship management, and then continue your bachelor's at F.I.T. in FMM if you want to start your own business in the fashion industry. . . but in the FMM program you can take elective classes in "small store fashion retailing" and "starting a small business", which are courses specifically geared to teach you how to start a small business. Most importantly, take a look at the curriculum and read the course descriptions to see if the course offerings are to your liking. Take an accounting course as well.

What big companies can I work for? What kind of job will I start out with? I will be going to school in New York more than likely LIM College. Thanks!

one thing I tell ppl is if u want to get a job as a fashion buyer, merchandiser etc, get a degree in Business….. U can work for and Dept store, even boutiques they all have it
but guess what??? they hire from within, I kno cashiers, who worked their way up to senior buyer, hardly any company hires someone to the top, they want u to kow the business from the ground up
Gettinga degree in Fashion is a waste b/c if u graduate, and still can’t find a job in that area, u will NEED another job while looking, and no other company will take that degree seriusly…..get a job as a cashier in retail, and stay there, and NEWTORK

Which path would u choose? A Fashion School or a 4 year university?

I have been a college student for the past three years but have only taken undergraduate courses, no courses related to my field. Well, maybe 2 or 3 courses related to my major. My major is Computer Science.

I have decided to change major. I want a degree in Fashion Design & Merchandising.

Do I drop out of college and attend a fashion school, such as FIDM, Parsons or Art Institute-California Design College or, do I transfer to a 4 yr univ. such as CSULB or CSUN, which offer Apparel Design & Merchandising programs as well?

In your honest, thoughtful and sincere opinion, which idea is better? Less costly?

My dreams are the following:
1. I want to open and run my own clothing store. I plan to sell clothing, shoes and accessories.
2. Start my own clothing line, which I will sell at my store as well.

Also, is Fashion Design & Merchandising the right major/degree/program for me?

FIDM (Fashion Institue of Design Merchandise) is a school in California thats based on nothing but fashion. www.fidm.com

As far as reputation goes, Parsons is tops in the US. FIDM is a great school as well, but I'm just talking about reputations since you asked about the "best place".

But, in terms of the best for YOU, you should seriously visit the campuses and decide that for yourself. Scouring their web sites, catalog and talking to recruiters really helps, but you'll be spending lots of time there, so picking the one with the best culture will be really important. Going to either will put a ton of pressure on you so if you don't even like being there (much less working with everybody there), it might spell trouble..

I also suggest finding some alumni from each school and contacting them to find out if they enjoyed their experiences there. You might be able to learn a lot of things they don't put in the catalogs! Good luck!

Hi!

Well I would say that’s a tough decision! I can tell you though that if I were you, I would want to go to a school that specialized in not only my degree but in the industry in which I will be working.

One thing about FIDM is they are ALL ABOUT FASHION. They are so well known in the fashion industry for their graduates it’s awesome.

I have friends who went to FIDM, one who is a celebrity stylist, and she says going to FIDM is the best decision she ever made.

The school really helped her to get awesome work experience and the classes are not just taught in the classroom, there are many days where you’re having to work on projects that take you into the Fashion District which happens to be only a couple of blocks away from FIDM!

FIDM is also on the map because of such grads as Nick Verreos who was on Project Runway and now teaches at FIDM, and even fashion design Monique Lhullier. There are so many more well known graduates, it would be hard to list them all, but I would go to FIDM’s web site at: www.fidm.edu and take a look at their list of graduates, it’s pretty impressive.

Also, my friend says the advisors at FIDM are very nice in answering any questions about the school, careers or even financial aid! If you haven’t already, I would go to FIDM’s web site and make an appointment with an advisor and find out for yourself how great this school really is.

What is the best fashion design school?

I want to be a designer one day and I’m not sure what’s the best school to go to. Some schools I’ve heard that are good are:

-Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM)
-Academy of Art University
-Parsons
-Pratt University

I was leaning toward to FIDM but then I heard it’s a waste and you can’t get a bachelor’s. If there are any that are better than the ones I’ve listed, please suggest them!

FIDM is laser-focused on training you for a career in Fashion Design or Fashion Merchandizing. Fashion design is RUTHLESSLY competitive and FIDM doesn't have the muscle to open up doors for very many students. If your thing is more Fashion Merchandising, you will probably end up as an assistant GAP store manager, which you could do with two years of work as a sales clerk and have no debt.

I did have a friend who went to FIDM for two years and then transferred to a 4-year school to get a degree in general marketing. She thought the FIDM gave her the perspective and edge she needed for her job, but the Bachelor's degree opened doors.

One way to combine the two is to get your Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design or Fashion Merchandising while getting the liberal arts education that accompanies it. Stephens College (www.stephens.edu) has a very good record at placing women (yep, it's a "girls school") in fashion careers.

Should I go to school for something I enjoy doing or something that is going to give me a secure future?

I love fashion and shopping, etc. I really would like to go to school for Fashion Merchandising, however, sometimes I think that going to school to be a nurse, or a dental hygiensit would be a better choice because it’s a more “secure” job. What do you think? Has anyone went to school for something that they liked and realized that they should have went to school for something else..?

Is there any way you can take both courses? Major in one and minor in the other. That way you can do either when you graduate.

There is nothing saying you have to have only one choice.

Or, take the safe route for now and then go to night school for the other once you have started working. You never know, you may end up really liking working with people doing the nursing or dental hygienist.
