Considered as a group, the neocons have a fairly concrete identity — they are intensely hawkish Democrats (or the offspring of intensely hawkish Democrats) who bolted the party in the late '60s/early '70s after it turned against the Vietnam War. They tend to be Jewish, urban and intellectual. Many of them worked for Scoop Jackson (the hawkish Democratic Senator from Washington State.) Some of them started out on the far left fringe of American politics (Trotskyists, etc.) then moved right and kept going. Some are admirers of the late University of Chicago professor and philospher Leo Strauss.

These are all generalizations, but there are enough people who fit enough of the points to make the profile valid.

Ideologically, though, neocon is a much more nebulous term. It's not like there's some kind of neocon Politburo that lays down a rigid party line on any and all points — although the Project for a New American Century probably comes closest to filling that function.

It's easy enough to point to some common themes that are generally identified with the neocons: contempt for international organizations and the concept of multilateralism; impatience with traditional balance-of-power diplomacy; a cultish devotion to the use of military power; an outspoken belief in the superiority of Western culture and political institutions; a messianic vision of America's mission to "civilize" the world, which at times (Max Boot) makes them sound like caricatures of old-fashioned European imperialists. And of course: an intense identification with the state of Israel, and a willingness, even eagerness, to use American power to protect and further Israeli security interests.

But there are nuances on all these points. Some neocons support the maximum Likud position — one state (Jewish) between the Jordan and the sea. Some don't. Some are more willing to use multilateral institutions to pursue American interests. Some aren't. Some are more cynical about the "spreading democracy" meme than others.

Personally, I would not describe Dick Cheney or Donald Rumsfeld as neocons. Certainly not on the first count (personal biography). And not on the second (ideological affinity), either. At the end of the day, Cheney and Rumsfeld are politicians and bureaucrats. They are not intellectuals — not by a long shot. They are consumers of ideology, not producers.

To me, the neocons and the realists are rival schools of foreign policy intellectuals, competing for the patronage of political leaders such as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Delay, etc. With a few exceptions, they are servants of power — not holders of power.

Since most American politicians (like most American voters) know very little about the rest of the world, they usually don't have detailed positions on the kinds of foreign policy issues the neocons and the realists spend their professional lives debating. Instead, politicians have belief systems, typically reflecting some fairly basic value judgments: America must always be the strongest nation on earth, or America should try to cooperate with its allies, or whatever.

I'm hoping I can somehow get $15,000 for the first semester (august), then will apply for student loans the following semesters.

I am 24, and have a BS from a state school (why? because my parents told me if I did what they wanted first, they would then pay for the degree I really wanted, but have now backed out). I know NOTHING about loans since my parents paid for my first degree and am completely scared I won't be able to attend my dream school.

I'm from Indiana, and have been living in Chicago for a year.

I really dont think you have much hope of getting a loan for that amount, especially you being a student. Try talking to your parents again, maybe they will take out a loan for you and you can pay them back when you can. Good luck.

PS. Just to make it clear, my 16year old sister (not my 10year old one. Lol.) would be the one picking the clothes. Lol. I suck at that stuff…

You are way too young to be using that lame excuse that you are a guy and "hate and suck at shopping". The key is to understand what she likes and be considerate of that and then go after it.

You are in Switzerland, wonderful, there are many things she'd enjoy getting from a foregin country; nice boots to wear after skiing, a great fashion bag, etc. Have you sister accompany you, but you should know her and pick it out for her. Start to no suck at this…you have a long life of buying gifts for girls/women ahead of you, so hone your skills!

I don’t see it on the list, but Full Sail would be a good place to check out. They are specifically for computer media and such. They are in Winter Park, FL.

My husband even says I should just give up because he says it seems to be a waste of time. I don't think I should even finish school because I think it will be a waste of money.
Ok, I understand people saying that being late was bad, but the place I was going was 55 minutes away and I left 1 1/2 hour early and was still like 20 minutes late because I didn't know the traffic was going to be as bad as it was and I'm sure everyone is late sometimes. Also, when I could tell I was running late I called the recruiter and she said it was ok and that they understood the place can be hard to find. They did tell me I did well in my interview questions. But it was between me and 1 other candidate and I'm assuming chances are the other candidate got the job just because I ran late.

I'm really not trying to excuse myself for being late but I'm pretty sure everyone has been late to something at sometime especially if you're going to a place you've never been before.

Why are you giving up on your dream???

So one company never returns your calls, have you shown up in person to talk to someone? Have you tried talking to someone at the company that's far away??? Have you tried looking somewhere else?

Never give up on an education, and NEVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF!

Getting into a good school:
First: Focus on your school work. On a top ten list of things you need to do–that is #1 thrugh 10. Good grades will open doors for you–bad gradees will close doors.
Second: DO NOT neglect your courses in English and Math–these are more important than any others that you take. Poor grades or failure to take college prep classes in these classes (preferably AP classes) will not only hurt your chances of getting in, you will not be adequately prepared to do the work.
Three–Do not get sucked into the hype about "how competitive" getting into college is. If you have a good high school record, you can get into a good school. the "competition" so callled is really only among a few people who are focused on a school's name vaule (e.g. Harvard or Yale)–and nothing else. But the reality is tha tyou can get an excelllant education at many univeristies–and outside of that status competition that surrounds a nandful of schools, collleges are more likely to compete for your attention thanthe other way around–if you have the grades.
Fourth–there's plenty of information online when the time comes to acutally apply. The main things you'll need to look for are thecollege admissions web pages (including application forms, etc.) and e-mail contacts for asking questions. they can walk you through the aplications process–as can the counsellors at your school.

Finally–you are in high school–don't get too serious. This is a special time–so take some time off and enjoy these years! Good luck!
