Career in the Fashion Industry?

I'm a junior in High School and am trying to figure out what might be the best career choice for me.

How hard is it to get into a career in the fashion industry? I'm moving to LA after I graduate and was planning on going to Occidental College, but do you think I should try FIDM instead?

Is there anything I could do now to start preparing for a fashion career?

Forget about LA. You need to go to F.I.T.(Fashion Inst. Tech.) in New York. New York City is the fashion capitol of the world, and FIT is one of the best schools in the country for all aspects of the industry. After graduating from there, you can pretty much write your own ticket.

I am starting to apply for college already for Fall 2009. I would be a senior this year at a private high school, but due to many circumstances in my freshman and sophomore years), I am going to take a course to get my GED this fall instead.

I have always wanted to go to art school for fashion, so I do know what I want to do unlike many dropouts. I am planning to apply to Otis & FIDM in CA, and thinking about FIT & Parsons too. I am leaning towards CA because I have lived on the West Coast my whole life, my family and friends are here & moving to NY at 18 by myself would be a definite challenge.

I really wanted to go to Otis, but both Otis & Parsons are very expensive. FIT & FIDM are cheaper. FIT is a better education and has merchandising (which I am leaning towards more than design) but FIDM is in LA.

With a GED, I know I could get into FIDM but I'm not sure about the rest, as they are pretty selective as it is. Between LA & NYC I'd pick LA, but NY has a better rep. Help?
I was thinking about the Art Institutes but the one in LA does not have Fashion Design or Merchandising.

Also it's only between CA and NY, not another state. I've never been to NY but I love LA and would prefer to live there.

My parents say that I can't move to NY but I am still considering it & applying there.

Art schools won't reject you based on your GED/SAT scores, it's more about talent and your passion for art. I say apply to all your dream schools, see which ones accept you, and go from there. Art schools in general are expensive, so you have to really think of it as an investment where you've gotta work hard and get your money's worth, but it sounds like you're on the right track about this. One thing to consider is where you want to work at after you're done with school: retail? Independent/startup fashion house? Major fashion house? Corporate? Entertainment?

As for living between the East and West Coast, do what's going to be best for your career, not what's going to be the most comfortable while you're in school. It's tough to move across the country, but a lot of people do it and learn a lot of other skills by being more independent.

It sounds like you're leaning more towards LA. One thing I'll pass on to you that a Creative Director once told me though: If you can make it in New York, you can make it in any city you choose in the world.

im 18yrs and i moved out to LA to go to fashion school but thats mostly for my parents .what i really want to do is act. I look for stuff on craigs list and i've done a few things but im just afraid i have no talent. I try so hard and i love it and im willing to dedicate myself to it. I took actings classes in high school, but i was never in the play things cuz i couldnt sing and i wanted a lead so i found it pointless for me to try out. But i feel like 18 is too old like i should have started as a kid… but my parents were against it =( ugh. I talk very vally and im blonde and i feel like theres so many of the same girls like me out there that i wont stand out or get taken seriously. I've heard that i should try teen agencys like tampona nd clean and clear commerical. and i'd LOVE to do that but i dont know any legit agencys. any1 know any?

remember to act is just like real life!so donnot give up,you might surpise yourself!

I am a junior in high school, and an aspiring fashion designer. I am not completely sure if I want to be a "designer." but so far that sounds the best, I love to sew, I just don't know If I would be doing that much sewing. My future goal is to start out by opening a little boutique titled "Chimmer" a play on my last name and shimmer, and then hopefully go on to do bigger things in the industry. I was wondering if this is a suitable career for me. Is it difficult to get into the industry? Some colleges that I was thinking of attending are: Parson (NYC) and FIDM (LA). How difficult is it to be accepted into these schools. I am an average student, mostly As and Bs with a few Cs and maybe one D. I have taken fashion design 1 and 2 and fashion merchandising 1 and 2 already in high school. I was also in an FCCLA fashion design competition last year where I won a gold metal at state and am in the same competition this year. I am an editor of the school newspaper, in French club, and National Art Honors Society. I am currently taking 4 art classes and have already taken 2 others. Next year I am planning on taking AP Studio Art. My grade point average is 2.8/4.0. Is this enough to get me into those schools? Also, are there any other colleges that you would recommend, or any other job related to fashion?

I am not in the fashion industry or anything,but my friend she is in the fashion industry and she works for Citizens of Humanity or Seven for all Man Kind and such and this is what she told me.
She told me that you need a proper education,you have to study design(Sorry but I dont know for how many years)
She also said it isnt easy unless you know someone in the fashion industry that could help you get started by interning or something.That is the easiest way of getting in the fashion industry.And if not,you can still get into the fashion industry as easily by just looking to your teachers and school administrators or even an aqquaintance you walk by every day for class.
For internships
Sadly you are not paid for the internship but that should not really matter all that much I guess if you have a great passion for it.She said that you are usually in design,marketing or production if you are interning.But,education isnt that important than the actual work.You have to have education to find an internship or something but other than that like resumes and such,its all about the work experience.
Show that you want this and it is your passion and all,remember motivationn!

And she said that her career sky-rocketed and she got great reccomendations and such.I dont know about the grade-point average or anything to get into that school.But if you search around and explore the website,maybe even go on campus someday it will probably help.

Fashion Industry Question…?

Are there any jobs in the fashion industry besides in LA or NYC. I want to move to NYC in 3 years to go to school for fashion. For now I would like some experience. What are some places to move to?

You could also go to Miami FL. or Chicago IL. any city that is big time and has a scene of its own. you could also look into seatle, austin, and atlanta. for even more experiance, Europe is amazing. Paris, London, and Milan are the best for fashion

i have only asked 2 or 3 big companies asking them if anyone is willing to look at my designs like buckle and wet seal, but never did get a response back. i cant sit and wait at high school and listen to all their boring meetings about local or nearby colleges for my last 2 yrs, i know wat i want 2b and wat im good at. Fashion, unique at times, but can add so much to the fashion industry and its trends. all i want to do for the most part is be a well liked designer in the future, i know i have 2 make my way, but i dont need 2 go 2 any fashion school for designing. i dont want 2 get ripped off and have someone take credit for my design after they said they didnt like it. True i do need the money, but who doesnt? But im not doing just for the money but for the love of fashion. its all around me, in my head, on my papers, past present and future. i live in a small town and cant go to any big city like NY or LA and walk in and show someone my designs. please help me! thanks a ton, kitty

Here's what you don't want to hear:
Wet Seal etc., is a "brand" not a designer. They buy clothes from mass producing fashion houses. Their private label is not from a wet seal designer, but is rather selected and purchased en masse, and wet seal labels are added.
Next…You know you're good and you know thats what you want to do, but you're not special and you don't get to skip the steps the rest of us have taken. Do you know how to make a pattern? Do you know how to think things through before setting them in pattern? Do you know the practical crap or just what you think you need to know? You say you don't want to go to FIDM or Parsons, but you want the fashion houses to let you in anyway? You're dreaming.
Next – there is no protection for your design, no copyrights…"ripping off" is a way of life in the design world. Unfortunately, but it's the truth.
Next – EVERYbody does it for the love of fashion.
Next – and perhaps the most disturbing – you live in a small town, you wanna be Hollywood, you wanna walk in to a design house and you want someone to look at your designs, but you don't wanna do LA or NY.
Where would you like to do your designing? Podunk?
Do you think fashion week on either coast will invite you from Podunk???

You – my little friend, need to listen to other people. Listen at those boring meetings. Go to those boring schools….cuz without them, you're not getting a pinky toe in the door of a fashion house. And believe it or not…it's fun. I had an absolute blast and a half at FIDM and I have had great jobs because of it. I started as an intern, then assistant, and went from there.

Now that being said…if you're all you say you are, I highly suggest trying out for Project Runway.
If you're as good as you say you are, you'll kick everybody's ass…
And I, for one, will be your BIGGEST cheerleader.

fidm in l.a??? fashion school?

is it hard to get into the fashion school fidm in la? and what are the requirments??? is being in stylist hard?

FIDM is a great school to attend for fashion. As a matter of fact, I have a friend who is a celebrity stylist who graduated from FIDM and really credits FIDM for where she is today: From the classes to the networking.

In terms of getting accepted into the college, the advisors at FIDM really like to see students who are excited about attending FIDM and working in the fashion industry.

There’s a lot that’s required in the admissions process including an entrance project, essay, recommendation letters, ect. But that’s something that every student attending FIDM had to complete and it can be done.

From what my friend has told me about being a fashion stylist, a lot of the job is networking. Making connections and getting your name out there, as well as your work is very important. In LA, having a good reputation is very important. And besides, you never know when one job may lead to a referral to the next one!

FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) Question. Any help?

Okay so, i’ve really been wanting to attend FIDM (fashion institute of design and merchandising) for a couple years now and i’m moving to california early next year with my cousin. I really want to attend the OC campus but since the major I am planning on going into, requires me to finish my second year in LA, i’ve been thinking of just attending the LA campus.

But the thing is, it’s so expensive. I’ve also been hearing that it’s not that great of a fashion school and that a lot of fashion employers do not like this school and that it’s all hyped up to be nothing.

What do you think I should do?

If you have attended FIDM, what was your experience like there?

Pretty interesting information you’ve heard…because I have heard the opposite and I also have had friends go to FIDM and they had a blast there! If you are really concerned about the tuition fee overall than thats a legit concern but there is always ways, no matter what school you go to, for you to get some help for college tuition. If you really want to attend FIDM and have passion for the degree you want to pursue, the advisors here will go above and beyond to help you reach your goals! Tuition shouldn’t discourage you.

FIDM is the school if you want to get into Fashion, learn how to run your own buisness and are interested in anything artsy then its for you. All the campuses from including the OC and Los Angeles campuses are really great and when it comes to the L.A campus the surrounding Fashion district is the perfect place to get inspiration for any of your projects, in fact the instructors will encourage you to explore the area in and around the school to look for fabric…styles, trends…the architecture form the old 1920s buildings…Downtown Los Angeles is really growing quite a lot and visually its only getting better. It’s a great place to look at for the way exteriors and interiors at the nearby shops and hotels are being built if you wanted to get into Interior Design.

If you look at the FIDM website they have an awesome Career Center that helps you get internships or jobs in whatever industry you are interested in and even when you graduate they are there to help you out for a lifetime!

Employment wise, tons of grads go on to work as celebrity stylists, marketers for huge corporations whether in the entertainment or design realm or become well known fashion designers like Nick Verreos (who teaches at the L.A campus) and Monique Lhullier, to name a few. They even have grads that go on to start their own buisness whether it be in event planning, running their own boutique, branding their own line or showing it at a runway show…the possibilities are endless and FIDM students are in high demand because they know that FIDM’s curriculum has provided them with a well-rounded employee! Even if you get into any fashion or anything design related, they make sure you get the buisness side too so that you are well prepared to run your own line or become a part of a buisness.
